Planting in Odd Containers!

Continuing with our trend of gardening on a budget, I started think about the high price of decorated ceramic pots and other eye catching containers. Plants, if grown from seed, can be incredibly budget friendly to grow. But if you add in the price of a nice pot, the price of your veggies or flowers more than doubles!

So my question to you is what random items have grown veggies, fruits, flowers, shrubs or trees in?

I personally have bought random containers at charity shops - anything from tea pots to aluminum umbrella stands! I was taking my dog for a walk the other evening and saw that someone had used old pieces of white PVC pipe with an opening about a 30cm wide to plant their ornamental flowers. They simple cut the pipe in different heights, wedged them into the ground in a beautiful pattern, filled them with soil and flowers. It looked so modern and cool! My neighbor also uses a rusty wheelbarrow to grow sedum and other fun plants.

So tell me - what strange items have you grown plants in? And if you would like, please share photos of your fun contraptions!

i use old plastic paint/fertiliser tubs and 99p buckets from the likes of the pound shops,i have 24 pepper/chillie plants potted up this way,i can lift them by the handle and carry them to where i want them,the large chicken pellet ones (10ltr size) are perfect for melons in the g/house or training a young dwarf fruit tree, raspberries/blackcurrants or gooseberries,they can be rotated aboutin the greenhouse to get them growing the way you want.for potatoes,i use recycled old half dustbins that the council was throwing away,big enough to plant 3 tubers and have space..

I use my families old trainers and boots. Anything from Grandchildren's fravourite trainers to son's RAF boots. (when outworn) Fill with compost and bedding plants/seeds and a lovely arrangment of colour developes. It always give folk walking past a smile on their faces.

I like this idea! I think you've insprired me to plant some pansies and snapdragons in some ancient wellies I own. I'll defintely drill in a few holes for drainage and am depending on the rubber to keep the roots warm.

Bought a broken urn in a garden centre once at a very reasonable price, laid each half on it's side and planted each with shallow rooted plants. It looks really good and adds a different dimention to the garden.

Very good idea. I'll definitely look at broken clearance items in a different light and try to get creative as to how I can work them into my garden.
