I thought keen fruit growers would like to hear about this weekend's Apple Day at Kentwell Hall!
Saturday 28th - Sunday 29th September
Kentwell has a collection of over 60 apple and pear varieties, from Bramleys to the Pitmaston Pine Apple. The first fruit trees were planted in the 17th Century, and the espaliered orchard maintains this layout today, with trees both ancient and modern producing fruit for the House and Tearooms.
Taste and compare varieties including the Irish Peach, Summer Golden Pippin, Crimson Queening and Emrith Early. For traditionalists, Suffolk varieties include the Sturmer Pippin, St Edmund's Pippin and Lady Henniker.
Head Gardener Peter Suttle will be on hand to provide tasting notes on the apples and answering your pomicultural questions. It is a great opportunity to broaden your knowledge of traditional and rare British apple varieties.
Open 11am - 5pm. The House is open, but all Apple Day activity takes place in the 17th Century Walled Garden. See www.kentwell.co.uk for more information and advance booking discount.
