We as looking for a fast growing shrub/bush to form a screen for privacy and wonder if anyone could suggest something suitable.
We need something to grow quickly to form a barrier (a space of a couple of feet) to stop the view into the garden and also to give a bit of privacy and security. At the same time this plant would need to be nice enough to be a feature of the garden, not just an evergreen bush. Something ornamental would be perfect if anyone could suggest anything.
I've been looking into screening shrubs/bushes myself for my garden for a few weeks now. Give me a little bit of time to pull together my findings and I'll get back to you with some suggestions.
In the meantime, does anyone else have any ideas for Plant Queen?
After looking at my garden and brainstorming for a bit, I've decided to do a mix of tall shrubs instead of one type of plant. I do not want the wall to look like an actual wall, I'd rather have it seem more organic and mysterious.
Here is are some of the ideas I have for panelling type planting to create privacy:
Long and large containers to hold bamboo
Viburnum sargentii Onondago - Full sun. Fast growing upright to 2.5m.
Young foliage is purplish, it turns green during the summer then changing to red and orange tones for the autumn. Heads of purple buds open to cream flowers in May.
Berberis sieboldii - Red/orange leaves. Will only grow up to about 1.5m, but it could work as part of the design.
Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’, a popular plant with a strong sweet scent flowering in May and early June that purple and white. Sun or semi shade, 1.5-1.8m.
Viburnum tinus Variegata - I know it's an evergreen, but it does bloom white flowers from October - March which is a nice touch!
Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' - Mock Orange - Lovely shrubs with white cherry bloom type flowers. Grows about 2m in full to partial sun.
I hope some of these suggestions help! I think they all are pleasing to the eye and not at all drab. :)
That's really helpful Laurel. I will definitely take a look at the plants you have suggested. I really like the sound of Viburnum sargentii Onondago, Viburnum tinus Variegata and Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile'. You've given me a lot to think about!!
