Question: SLUGS!

Hi Everyone,

Since the frogs have hopped off to their winter slumber, I've found that slugs are somehow (and I DON'T know how) managing to get into my conservatory and into the kitchen to eat the catfood! I can't put slug pellets down obviously, with having three cats, but am at a loss as to how I can stop these critters coming in. I've no idea HOW they get in or out for that matter, have put a thick band of rock salt outside all around the house. I've put table salt down any holes in the floor, no matter how small eg. where radiator pipes come up through floor. I've even put it on top of the skirtings, but STILL the little beasts can get in. Any suggestions to help - please!

Hi Karen - Slugs can be such a pain! Sorry to hear they have invaded your greenhouse, kitchen and that your cats are having to battle for their food.

Salt is a great start and I have a feeling you will start to see less and less of these little devils. Another suggestion would be ground cornmeal (polenta) Place a handful of cornmeal in a glass jar or plastic tub and place it on its side. Slugs love the sweet cornmeal and will climb inside only to get stuck in the grainy stuff.

Another trick involves beer! If possible, bury a few glasses in the ground all the way up to the rim. I would suggest placing the glasses at all four corners of your greenhouse and some by your kitchen door. Fill the glasses almost all the way to the top with beer. Slugs love beer just as much as us and will dive right in for a drink!

Another method I am fond of is copper tape. I think this method would work great for your kitchen problem. Simply lay down the copper tape at the foot of the door or any other area where you think the snails will enter. You can buy 4m of copper tape for fairly cheap at Homebase.
