Dahlias are a wonderfully unique flower to grow all around your garden. Their patterned blooms bring a pop of color and beauty to any space that is full sun or partial shade.
To plant dahlia tubers (not seeds!), you will either need a pot that is slightly larger than your tubers or a free spot in one of your flower beds that has loamy soil. Dahlia tubers only need to be planted a handful of centimeters below the dirt allowing their main stem to barely appear above the surface.
Once planted, you will not need to water your new plant until you start to see green stems come through the soil. Watering the tubers will cause them to rot. If planted in a bed, make sure to find a way to protect your new flowers from slugs. Slugs love dahlias since they are so green and tasty! You can either utilize slug repellent pellets or copper tape to keep slugs away from these beauties.
Expect to see your flower start to bloom about 8 weeks after planting the tubers. Fertilise with a low nitrogen fertiliser once you start seeming stems and then again about a month later.
